Fixing Access denied error: your organization does not allow external forwarding

These instructions are for troubleshooting forwarded 811spotter emails that are undeliverable or otherwise not going to [email protected].

Microsoft email users

Microsoft recently rolled out a security enhancement that blocks automatic forwarding rules, like those created for 811spotter.

If you're affected by this specific issue, you will see an error message similar to the following.

  • Diagnostic information for administrators:
    Generating server: BN6PR1801MB1970.namprd18.prod.outlook.com [email protected]

  • Remote Server returned '550 5.7.520 Access denied, Your organization does not allow external forwarding. Please contact your administrator for further assistance. AS(7555)'

To fix the issue, read the Microsoft Help article, "Configure outbound spam filtering in EOP."

There is a very, very easy fix. Someone from your team with Office 365 Administrator rights needs to take the following steps:

The completed rule should look similar to this.

Once complete, it’s important to resend the emails which we missed. This is also a simple process very similar to the original setup.

  • Open your email rules: Manage Rules & Alerts.

  • Select the 811spotter rule then select Copy.

  • If you have multiple emails accounts, you should copy it to your work inbox.

  • Double-click on the copied rule (at the bottom) and change the received date to a couple days before the Microsoft rule went into effect (the date below is for example purposes only).

  • Click OK and Next three times until you see the Finish rule setup window.

  • Select Run this rule now on messages already in “Inbox.”

  • You do not need to check Turn on the Rule because the other rule is still running.

  • You should now see emails in your outbox.

  • You can delete the new rule or just leave it as is.
